IRVINE – A mother and her 3-year-old child were airlifted to Mission Hospital in Mission Viejo on Thursday night after crashing into a traffic light and suffering critical injuries, authorities said.
The 29-year-old mother was driving east on Portola Parkway, near Yale Court, when she lost control of the Honda Odyssey and crashed into the light shortly before 11 p.m., said Sgt. Cathy Sherer of the Irvine Police Department.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash and it is unknown what caused the woman to lose control.
The child was strapped into a car seat at the time of the accident.
"It might have been his saving grace," said Capt. Stephen Miller of the Orange County Fire Authority.
The identities of the mother and child are being withheld until family members are notified, Sherer said.
